Writing a Novel Isn’t the Issue… It’s All the Other Crap You Have to Worry About

Don’t let self-publishing drive you crazy!

I’ve been prepping a novel to self-publish for over six months now, and every time a friend or family member asks about my progress, I grit my teeth and say the same thing: “I’m getting there.”

I wish I could give a definitive date. It’s not like I haven’t tried. But a little thing called life delayed my efforts, as did several outstanding decisions.

It’s crazy because the actual writing of the book wasn’t the issue. Most of my challenges stemmed from questions about self-publishing. There are so many options — and opinions — out there, it can be difficult to know which path to take when you are just getting started.

For anyone contemplating the self-publishing approach, my advice is this: Know what you are getting yourself into and plan accordingly. It is no simple affair.

That’s not to say it is impossible. People do it—and do it well—every day. But that doesn’t change the fact it can be daunting at the onset.

Perhaps I can make it easier for others contemplating this route. Here are a few questions I faced in my journey.
