CHAPTER ONE
Headlights bobbed against the slick mountain roadway as Jacqueline Darcy sped along.
Five. That was the death count for Prescott’s roadways this year. The record was eight. With New Year’s a little more than a week away, there was no chance it would hold. Drunk drivers took to these winding roads like they were part of the racing circuit, only to realize too late their vulnerability.
Jaq’s radio crackled as a piano rendition gave way to a choir-driven Christmas carol. The lead singer belted the first bar, her melodic voice overtaking the instruments and filling the car with hope and love.
Jaq snapped the dial to the left. There was nothing cheery about being out here on the frozen roadway this time of night.
She rounded the s-shaped curves, her car hugging the center white line. Prescott natives knew how to maneuver this roadway, even in the snow and ice. City people, not so much.
