Introversion and the Writing Process

It affects your work more than you think

I’m a proud introvert. While others pull their energy from group settings and adventures, I generate mine from being alone. Simplicity appeals to me, as does carving out ample time to separate myself from the world and all its demands.

This mindset applies to more than just socialization. It also encompasses my writing efforts. It occurred to me today, as I struggle to complete a work assignment due in 24 hours, I often approach writing tasks like I do my time with others… I must be in the mood, and when I’m not, I avoid it, choosing instead to conserve my energy.

The assignment I’m struggling with today, for example, blends design with innovation. It is not outside my wheelhouse. On a good day, I could craft a thousand-word post off the top of my head. Yet, I’m struggling because I don’t feel the creative vibe. Instead of typing away, I’m mentally dancing around any sort of connection to the work, throwing words on the page that lack meaning. I am truly just going through the motions.

So, if the topic is not to blame, then what is?

My lack of mental and emotional energy. I’m tired. I’ve been pushing myself to tackle the many — and I mean MANY — elements that go into self-publishing a novel. Little of that has to…
